11th grader QiHan Zhao was recently accepted into the Stanford University Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills Program for the summer of 2018. QiHan is the third Léman student to be accepted to Stanford's prestigious program, which only accepts 30 students from around the world each year. Armin Tavakolli '16, currently in his second year at Dartmouth, and Simone Malekar, a current senior, also participated in the program. QiHan interned at the highly selective Stanford University Science, Technology and Medicine Summer Program in the summer of 2017 where he says he learned "what an inclusive and visionary community Stanford Medicine is," which fueled his desire to apply for this program on the recommendation of Léman Science Department faculty member Dan Ajerman.
QiHan, an IB Diploma student who has a strong interest in medicine and pathology, is also interning in the Laboratory of Bioregenerative Medicine and Surgery with Dr. Jason Spector at New od体育 Presbyterian Hospital, shadowing current graduate students as they research the application of collagen to increase the rate of wound healing. Last summer, QiHan researched early detection of colorectal cancer at Wuhan University in China with a group of fellow High od体育 Students. The team entered the project at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition at MIT, where they won a Bronze medal.
